Chevening

The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO)'s Chevening Award Scheme offers one year postgraduate scholarships at British universities for Masters Degree studies every year. The objective of this scholarship scheme is to bring to the UK present and future leaders, decision-makers and opinion-formers including particularly able students from countries with which the UK’s political, social and economic relations are expected to develop. The Chevening Scholarship programme operates two schemes, namely:

(i) full-funding - covers all fees plus payment of maintenance allowance sufficient to enable a scholar to meet personal expenses for term time and vacation. An economy return airfare to Britain is also provided   (ii) part-funding - a new scheme which encourages joint funding. This shared scheme may include shared costs from funding sources like employers, public companies, universities, trusts or other grant funding organisations. Applicants should state clearly which scheme they are applying for. Applications for part funding will be highly considered and should include supporting proof of other confirmed funding sources. In order to be considered, candidates must be:  
  • between 25 - 40 years of age
  • a Zambian citizen and resident in Zambia at the time of application
  • a graduate who has obtained a degree with distinction or merit (or their equivalent) from a recognised University.

Chevening Scholarships are intended for people who will make a significant contribution to Zambia’s development and have already established a track record in their chosen career. Female applicants and candidates who live outside Lusaka are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants who are short-listed will be contacted to attend interviews in Lusaka. Applicants who do not hear from us after a specified date in the Chevening application advertisement should consider their applications as unsuccessful.

Chevening scholarships 2011/12 and beyond

After the UK’s comprehensive Spending Review for 2011-15, Ministers have agreed that the Chevening Programme be more strategic and better targeted.  We have therefore decided to work in partnership with the Beit Trust in Zambia to provide a joint Chevening/BEIT scholarship scheme with the University of Leeds. We are currently examining the eligibility requirements, selection criteria, target regions and priority study areas. Details of the new scheme for the 2012/13 academic year will follow shortly.
