Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, has today sent her congratulations to His Excellency President Rupiah Banda on the celebration of Zambia's Independence Day. She wished the people of Zambia happiness and good fortune in the coming year.

Her Majesty said;

"It gives me great pleasure to send Your Excellency my warmest greetings on the celebration of your National Day, together with my best wishes for the good fortune and happiness of the people of Zambia in the coming year.”

In delivering this message, the British High Commissioner, Tom Carter, added: "I would like to add my own congratulations on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Zambia.  Zambia and the United Kingdom share a great deal in common, and I feel that the relationship between our two countries is as warm now as at any point in the 45 years of independence.  As British High Commissioner, I have the pleasant task of working with the government and people of Zambia to ensure that that special relationship continues to thrive into the future as well, as I am sure it will."

Adding a personal perspective on Her Majesty The Queen, the High Commissioner said: “I know that Her Majesty retains a warm and happy memory of her visit to Zambia in 1979 for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting held that year in Lusaka.”
